The 4th of July is synonymous with freedom, and what represents freedom better than the open road? Whether you are staying right here in Cumberland to catch the local fireworks or packing up the car for a long weekend getaway, Independence Day is the official kickoff to summer driving season.
Before you fire up the grill and break out the sparklers, taking a few minutes to think about your vehicle can save you from a holiday headache. Here is your ultimate 4th of July guide to keeping your holiday weekend rolling smoothly.
Declare Independence from Car Trouble
There is nothing less patriotic than being stranded on the shoulder of the highway in the July heat. Before you embark on your holiday road trip, run through this quick checklist:
Check Your Tire Pressure and Tread: Hot pavement can do a number on under-inflated tires. Make sure your tires are aired up to the recommended PSI (found inside your driver’s side door jamb) and check the tread for uneven wear.
Test the A/C: You do not want to discover your air conditioning is blowing warm air when you have a car full of family members and a trunk full of potato salad.
Top Off Your Fluids: Coolant is your engine's best friend during the dog days of summer. Check your coolant, oil, and windshield washer fluid levels.
Inspect the Battery: Extreme heat drains car batteries just as fast as freezing winters. If your car is hesitating to start, have the battery tested before you leave.
(Need a hand? Our service department is happy to perform a multi-point inspection to ensure your vehicle is road-trip ready!)
Safe Driving Under the Sparklers
If your 4th of July plans involve driving to watch a fireworks display, keep a few safety tips in mind. Neighborhood streets will be packed with pedestrians, kids with sparklers, and pets who might be spooked by loud noises. Drive slower than usual in residential areas and keep your eyes peeled.
Additionally, if you are leaving a large fireworks event, pack some patience. Traffic can be notoriously gridlocked. Throw on a great summer playlist, keep the A/C running, and enjoy the extra time with your passengers.
