Service Tips
Get better gas mileage with these driving tips:
- Drive Sensibly. Aggressive driving, including speeding and rapid starts and stops, can lower gas mileage by 33% at highway speeds and 5% around town. Since it’s also safer, sensible driving may save you more than money.
- Follow the speed limit. Although each car is different, mileage usually goes down at speeds over 60mph. You figure each 5mph over 60mph increases your cost per gallon by 24 cents, based on a gas price of $2.67 per gallon.
- Avoid carrying unnecessary weight. Storing heavy items in your car, like golf clubs or toolboxes, decreases mileage and affects smaller cars more than larger ones. An extra 100 pounds could reduce your MPG by up to 2%.
- Avoid excess idling. Idling gets 0 MPG, and cars with larger engines typically waste the most gas.
- Use cruise control and overdrive gears. Setting the cruise control helps maintain a constant highway speed and will save gas in most cases. Overdrive gears slow your engine down – another way to save gas and reduce engine wear.
- Maintain tour car in top shape. Keep the tires inflated properly, change the oil and air filters regularly, and use proper grades of gas and motor oil.
